Krakow offers a range of celebrations, from huge public parties in the Main Square to more intimate gatherings in local neighborhoods. Below are the top five things to do at New Year’s in Krakow.
Party on the main square
The Main Market Square is the hub of Krakow’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Every year, this historic square transforms into a giant open-air party, drawing thousands of people to enjoy live music, entertainment, and a dazzling display of fireworks at midnight.
Local and international performers often take to the stage, offering a mix of pop, rock, and folk music. The atmosphere is electric, with people of all ages gathering to ring in the new year together. It’s an iconic experience and a must-do if you’re in Krakow for New Year’s Eve.
It’s a bit naff for me personally and ridiculously busy. But it’s a great place to be for the moment midnight hits if you love the feel of being part of a huge crowd.
Celebrate midnight on the river
For a more scenic New Year’s Eve, head down to the banks of the Vistula River, where large crowds gather to watch fireworks light up the night sky.
You’ll get a stunning view of the fireworks reflected in the water, and it’s a bit less crowded than the Main Market Square. The riverside offers plenty of space for people to gather with friends and family, sharing a bottle of champagne while ringing in the new year with fireworks exploding over Wawel Castle in the distance.
Just be careful down here. Two reasons. The police are sometimes right killjoys and will pass through fining people for drinking – yes, even at New Year. And fireworks fly everywhere (I got hit by one three years back. Still hurts).
Pub crawl
The legendary Krawl Through Krakow pub crawl is a New Year’s favourite for backpackers and young travellers. It’s the ultimate way to experience Krakow’s nightlife, as hundreds of participants hop from bar to bar in the city’s Old Town and Kazimierz districts.
The event is perfect for those looking for a fun and social atmosphere. With free shots at each stop and two full hours of free-flowing booze, it’s pretty gnarly.
Vodka tasting
You will have to book early to secure yourself a spot on the the city’s famous voddie tour if you wanna do it at New Year but it’s worth the hustle.
It’s a 3-hour romp through the history of the drink with a dedicated vodka guide. Very informative. A bit inebriating. It’s one of the best tours in the town to do in the evening if you ask us.
River cruises
For a more romantic or relaxed way to celebrate, consider booking a river cruise along the Vistula River.

If you only have time to do one, we’d wrap up warm and go for the Old Town. There are free walking tours (though they do ask for a tip at the end of it) that meet outside St Mary’s Church there. Day trip to the mountains
One of the best things about spending New Year in Krakow is the proximity to the Tatra Mountains, only a two-hour drive from the city.
Many day trip options are available to take you into the stunning winter wonderland of the Tatras, where you can enjoy hiking, thermal baths, or simply taking in the snow-capped peaks.

It’s not uncommon for snow to blanket the city, making it feel like a winter wonderland. However, snow is not guaranteed, as the weather can be unpredictable and recently it’s been more wet and windy than snowy and charming.
The cold is manageable if you’re prepared, so be sure to pack thermal clothing, warm boots, gloves, and hats. The wind can also make it feel colder than it is, especially in the open spaces like the Main Market Square and the riverside.

How much does New Year in Krakow cost?
New Year’s Eve in Krakow is actually surprisingly affordable, but prices do spike during the festive season, especially for flights and accommodation.
Flights to Krakow around New Year can cost upwards of $250 for a return trip, depending on where you’re flying from (at least that’s what we paid in 2023/24 for 2x flights from Bristol to Krakow and back), so it’s best to book well in advance – stats show that something like 90 days prior to travel at least is good for low-cost airlines.
Hotel rates also increase, particularly for accommodations near the Main Market Square.
You can expect to pay between £100 and £250 per night for mid-range to upscale hotels, while more budget-conscious travellers can find hostels starting around £20 to £50 per night.
Despite these higher prices than for most of the year, Krakow remains one of the most affordable cities in Europe for New Year’s Eve celebrations, especially when compared to places like Paris or London.
