We last visited Zakopane in December in 2023, but we’ve probably been over 10 times in total. It’s almost always VERY COLD and there’s almost always SNOW ON THE GROUND.
The last time we were there, the town was having a bit of a short warm snap, so snow fell as mushy rain. That changed halfway through our trip, and the whole place suddenly went to five degrees below zero, with heavy snowfall on the mountains and in the town.
The temperatures in Zakopane typically range from -10°C to just above freezing (0-5°C) in December. Winter days are chilly and shorter, and it’s not uncommon to experience sudden weather changes—one moment, it’s mild, and the next, there’s a fresh layer of snow.
Snowfall is frequent and sometimes heavy, especially in the higher elevations of the Tatra Mountains. Expect a snow-covered town and pack accordingly to enjoy the winter magic fully.
How to get to Zakopane in December
Zakopane is well connected by train, bus, and car from Krakow, which is the best city to access it from.

Zakopane truly comes alive in December with a variety of activities that capture the magic of winter. Here are the top things to do to get the best out of your visit:
Skiing
