Where is the Planty?
The Planty runs the whole way around Krakow’s Old Town, forming a complete ring around the historic center.
It makes Krakow unique, as you can walk along this tree-lined pathway to circle the Old Town’s sights with no need for directions—just follow the park path, and you’re back where you started, dipping into the Old Town to see the churches and squares whenever you like.
Its location means you’re never more than a few minutes from major attractions like the Market Square or Wawel Castle, and it’s accessible on foot by all hotels in the Old Town.
The history of the Planty
Originally, Krakow’s Old Town was surrounded by fortified walls, but by the early 19th century, they had fallen into disrepair.
In 1822, the city decided to demolish the walls and replace them with a green park that would refresh Krakow’s appearance and encourage public enjoyment.
The Planty was born; a park that connected directly to the Wawel Castle in the south, creating a continuous link between Krakow’s historical core and its most iconic landmarks on the castle hill.
This change transformed the area into one of Poland’s earliest urban parks, and by the modern era it had become a favourite of the locals for running, people watching, cafe going and more.

- Barbican – This 15th-century defensive structure marks the northern boundary of the Planty and is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval fortifications.

Running and jogging
For runners, the Planty provides an ideal 5km loop that allows you to take in Krakow’s history while staying active.
My favourite path extends south to the Vistula River, where views of Wawel Castle are a lovely reward – you can even add on a section to run into the castle up the steep steps at the end of the Planty and enjoy views down the river.
The flat, shaded trails make it a fantastic summer running spot. It can be icy in the winter so be wary if you run any time after December.
People watching
For some laid-back people watching, grab a coffee or snack from a nearby café and head to one of the park’s benches.
The Planty’s relaxed vibe and steady flow of locals, street musicians, and tourists make it perfect for observing the city’s atmosphere. If it’s sunny, it’s even better—lay out on the grass and take in Krakow at its best.
Just stroll
The Planty is made for wandering, with main paths and smaller side trails winding under trees and beside old statues. Strolling here offers a break from the busy streets, especially around midday when the sun filters through the leaves.
The Planty is also a nice evening walk as lamplights cast a warm glow over the historic scenery. Kinda spooky in the winter when there’s a mist in too.
With the kids
For families, the Planty has two standout playgrounds. One is located on the eastern side near the Swietego Sebastiana intersection, with newer equipment and picnic areas. It’s a cool play area made of wood and things with all natural play things.
Another is on the park’s western side, ideal for a quick break as you explore Krakow’s Old Town. These spots make the park family-friendly, giving children a place to play while parents enjoy the surroundings.
Best hotels overlooking the Planty
Staying near the Planty combines the convenience of the Old Town’s sights with a scenic view of Krakow’s most iconic urban green space.
The only downside is that many hotels here are close to tram lines, so you might hear some street noise in the early morning. However, last time I stayed at the incredible Academia Apartments, the sound didn’t bother me at all, especially that the pay off was floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the parklands!
